LITTLE EATON GREENWAY

Derbyshire Council Council has now acquired funding to convert the old railway line, that runs through the Parish at Coxbench, to a ‘Greenway’.  The 5.6 km 3m wide Greenway will run from Little Eaton to Rawson Green and will be open to pedestrians, cyclists and horses.  Access from Holbrook is proposed via Stoney Lane and Watering Lane.

The planning application has been submitted to AVBC and work could take place in 2024.  The link to the planning application CD8/1123/37 is here.  Representations can be made via the link provided and should be submitted by 14 January 2024.

While the Parish Council is supportive of the Greenway in principle, it is mindful of the concerns of residents along the Bottle Brook that nothing is done that will increase the risk of flooding to their homes.

Within the Parish this mainly relates to those properties from Holbrook Crossing (Near Manx Engines) to Coxbench Station (see adjacent map). Recent flooding from Storm Babet has shown how real a concern this is to them.

It is considered that simple changes to the detail specification of the Greenway will go a long way to satifying these fears.

The Parish Council is very grateful to Angelique Foster (Police and Crime Commissioner) and Trevor Ainsworth (Derbyshire County Councillor) for awarding us grants towards the cost of new play equipment for Mellors Lane Park.

NEW PICNIC TABLES FOR MELLORS LANE PARK

The Parish Council has purchased two new picnic tables for Mellors Lane Park.  They are made from recycled plastic material and should prove very durable and maintenance free.  They have been installed in the shade at the Makeney Road end of the Park.  The installation work was completed by Councillors, Village Volunteers and the Parish Warden on 13 November 2023.

NEW PLAY EQUIPMENT FOR MELLORS LANE PARK

The Parish Council are very pleased to have been awarded two grants towards the cost of installing new play equipment at Mellors Lane Park. The details of the two grants are given below.  The new goal/netball/cricket unit was installed on the 21st August 2023.

"Young People Engagement Project" - DPCC's Grant Award

The Parish Council has been successful in applying for a £5000 grant to provide equipment for young people at Mellors Lane Park as part of a 'Young People Engagement Project'.  It will likely consist of a goal, cricket stumps and a basketball hoop unit which will allow an individual or groups to practice their skills.  The grant has been awarded by Angelique Foster, the Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner.

"MCLS Fund" - County Councillor's Grant Award

Derbyshire County Councillor Trevor Ainsworth has allocated a grant from the Members’ Community Leadership Scheme (MCLS) of £255 to Holbrook Parish Council towards the costs of the multi sport equipment installation at Mellor's Lane Park.

MELLORS LANE PARK MAINTENANCE

The Parish Council is researching into new bins with lids as wildlife is pulling rubbish from the open bins.  AVBC have advised which type we are best to buy to improve this situation.

The bench next to the roundabout has had the seat replaced with new wood.

Playdale have replaced two faulty bolts on the Rotabounce.

The baby swings have had new seats fitted.

GORSEY PIECE MAINTENANCE

Work was carried out during mid November 2023 by contractors employed by the Parish Council to tidy the strip of land immediately behind the Belper Road wall.  This has involved clearing the brambles and tree saplings to allow other plants to flourish, including the gorse.  This work will allow future maintenance work of this area to be more readily carried out by the Parish Council.

SPEED INDICATOR SIGN

The Parish Council has been awarded a grant of £3120 by Angelique Foster, the Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner, towards the procurement and installation of a moveable electronic speed indicator in the Parish.  The initial placement will be on Makeney Road.  Other sites have been identified within the Parish for future placements.

COMET BUS

We have been successful in our request that the “Comet” bus should have an additional stop at Coxbench to increase the frequency of bus services in that part of the Parish.  A new 'up' and a 'down' stop have now been constructed on the B6179 close to Manx Engines at what was known as 'Holbrook Crossing'.

VANDALISM IN HOLBROOK

At the Parish Council meeting on 22nd February concerns were raised relating to the increase in vandalism within the Parish.

On Mellors Lane Park bolts have been deliberately removed from play equipment, which could have caused personal injury to anyone using it.  This has now been rectified.

Also on the Park the sign marking the Platinum Jubilee tree has been removed.  On the first occasion someone had unsuccessfully attempted to rip out the tree stake, so they came back with a saw and cut the whole sign off!  This has been reported to the police as criminal damage.  The commemoration plaque has not been found.

Coping stones have been removed from the top of a wall and left in the road, which has caused an accident and damage to a vehicle.

Road signs have been deliberately pulled and repositioned.  Other signs and plaques, often showing names of local sponsors, and mainly positioned in the planted areas on Makeney Road, Pond Road and Chapel Street have also disappeared.  The Pond Road sign has already been replaced.

The sign at Gorsey Piece has had the information ripped off and, after this was replaced, it was stolen again.

There is also some evidence of drug use in this area, so keep a close eye on your dogs and children when walking in the nature reserve.

On Saturday 4th February the gate into the field at the top of Pond Road was opened at night and the sheep were let out.  This happened at 2am and the sheep were in gardens and hedgerows and all over the road as a car was coming up the road.  Fortunately no livestock was injured.

The recycling bins outside the shop have been tipped upside down to deliberately smash glass.  This vandalism has been captured on CCTV.

Many of these incidents have happened late on Friday and Saturday evenings, so have a look at your CCTV footage and see if you can spot anything that may be useful to contact the police with.

The Parish Council have reported these events, but the police have asked that anyone having information about them or any other disturbances or vandalism should contact them directly.  They are asking that all of us share information to help to stamp out these petty crimes.

Please use the 101 number, or report any information to Crimestoppers 0800555111
